Déjà vu for Celtic as missed chances allow Kevins to earn share of the points
After a strong start of the season Castleknock came unstuck against a strong Malahide outfit before dropping another two points against Home Farm in mid week when failing to score despite having more chances than in any other game this season. All of this made the game today against St Kevins all the more important and it was clear that defeat today would put a sever dent in any promotion prospects.
The early exchanges were tense with no real pattern on what was a poor playing surface. Despite playing into a strong wind it was Celtic who gained the upper hand and took the lead mid way through the first half when Nathan O’Reilly pounced on the ball inside the box leaving the Kevins keeper with no chance. Kevins were rocked and Celtic sought to take advantage. Hughes and Hannon bossed the midfield and Celtics dominance grew. O’ Reilly could have and perhaps should have added a second . Then just on half time the striker, who was having a good game, was then denied by an excellent save from the Kevins keeper. HT: 1-0
In the second half, with a strong wind at their backs Celtic dominated possession but despite this lacked the quality in the final quarter to create any clear cut chances. With 15 minutes left Kevins broke down the right with their first attack of the half. The winger showed his pace and class before squaring the ball into the box where the on running striker finished well. A really good goal but against the run of play. Celtic were rocked and while they re-grouped and regained the upperhand they could not break down the well organised St Kevins defence with the nearest they came to a goal being an Antonio Neto free kick that was deflected just wide of the right hand post. FT: 1-1
First of all well done to St Kevins for never giving up and when their chance came carving out an excellent goal. As for Celtic this was could be seen, given their efforts, as two points dropped but on the other hand considering where Kevins lie in the table Celtic should not be too despondent. Celtic have been beaten only once this season but must learn that when the chances arise you have to take them. At this level you don’t get second chances. Some practice on finishing is required and when the Boys start taking their chances the Celts will definitely be in the mix as the business end of the season approaches.
