Congratulations to John Ronan & Eddie Bowden and their troops who have won the League title after defeating Shankill FC in their final game in Shanganagh Park. It was all the more creditworthy as the team had to bounce back after the massive disappointment of their Ferrari Cup Final defeat a couple of weeks ago against St Malachy's.
Celtic completed their league programme and were crowned champions after a fabulous season which saw them suffer just one defeat and have one draw. The team knew that victory today would see them finish top of the Major Division, and they set out with serious intent from the start. They made the breakthrough on 20 minutes when Lloyd Carolan set up James Smith who made it 1-0.
Lloyd Carolan made 2-0 on 30 minutes with an assist coming from Jordan Bowden. They could have doubled their advantage on 35 minutes when Christian Bowden hit the crossbar. The half time break came with Celtic well in command.
It was James Smith who got the insurance goal on 55 minutes after a pass from Lloyd Carolan who was having a superb game. Shankill were competing all the while and got on the scoresheet two-thirds of the way into the game. The last word was with Evin Lawlor when he shot home from 10 yards after Killian Ronan's shot on goal rebounded to Evin. It was a very difficult decision to select a man of the match, but in the end, it went to Stephen Fitzmaurice who put in yet another commanding performance. Congratulations to the managers for their dedication throughout the season and the players who stuck to their task from the start.
Celtic now look forward to starting in the new Under-19s Leinster Football League which is expected to begin toward the middle of November. There may be some challenge games in the meantime to keep the players in condition for the new season.
