Celtic went down to a very experienced Kilbarrack Utd side who look certain to win the Major Sunday division and have already secured promotion to Intermediate level. They scored a beauty on 15 minutes when a cross from the right was headed home expertly from the penalty spot giving Paddy Dunne in the Celtic goal no chance. The challenge for Celtic got all the more difficult in very wet conditions 4 minutes later when the ball was worked across the park by at least 5 players, starting on the left with Sean Beresford, who switched the play to the right where full back and Mark Nolan and Alan Clarke exchanged passes. The ball was quickly shifted to Liam Brady who shot from 25 yards which Paddy Dunne did well to stop. The slippery ball however ran loose, and while Shane Dunne did well to prevent the rebound being met by inside forward John Meleady, the ball was thumped home by Eoin Fowler. It was an excellently worked goal that involved everyone from 7 to 11 on the team, as well as others.
Celtic put in a much better performance in the second half, playing a lot of sweet passing but they lacked the necessary penetration, with the final pass or cross not finding the target. Best performers for Celtic today were Dan Germaine and Eoghan Farrell, but all the lads put in a shift. It was Kilbarrack who finished on a high note. A long ball from their keeper Dylan McNulty was cleverly flicked on into the path of the veteran number 14, Eamon Mulligan, who dispatched his shot from the edge of the box with a sweet left footed finish into the far corner of the net. In the end it was the superior finishing power of the Kilbarrack lads that gave them the Polikoff Cup which they well deserved overall.
