Drogheda Marsh Crescent 0 – Castleknock Celtic 3
The last time I looked at map, Drogheda straddled Counties Meath & Louth, not exactly North Dublin. That said the 17A’s were on the road early for this fixture in the wee county. The last trip this team made to Co. Louth (last season) the match had to be abandoned due to inclement weather and an appalling pitch. The pitch today was only marginally better as was the weather.
The highlight of the first half was a superb volley from Cory Power following a long free kick from deep inside his own half by Tom Fitzsimons which gave the home goalkeeper no chance. Celtic has lost the toss and in the second half found themselves playing uphill and into driving rain interspersed with sleet and snow. However, they defended exceptionally well with keeper Luke Kearney called upon a number of times.
Chances for Celtic in the second half were few and far between, and the few that came our way were being squandered. It took 30 minutes for Celtic to score their second, when leading scorer Ciaran Buggy blasted past the goalkeeper from the edge of the penalty area. Aidan Sampson secured the result with a well taken effort 10 minutes before fulltime.
Best for Celtic, apart from those already mentioned included David McCabe (again), Matthew Mullen & David Spillane
