In addition to 3 valuable league points, the other prize of offer today for a win, was guaranteed elevation were to the top of the league. With so much at stake, this fixture was never going to be a pretty affair.
For much of the first half possession was split 50/50. Whenever the opportunity arose, Celtic frontmen Cory Power & Darren Doyle were creating havoc with the Ashbourne defence. Celtic broke the deadlock on 30 minutes when leading scorer Power tucked the ball away in the corner of the Ashbourne net.
Prior to today Ashbourne had only lost 1 league match and they came out for the second half determined not to make it 2 losses. However, Celtic were up for the challenge, especially the physical challenge and didn’t give an inch.
As the final whistle blew there were mixed emotions on display. Frustration from the Ashbourne players – although for all their gestures and gesticulations, they only had 1 real scoring chance. Celtic players on the other had were delighted with the result. The result extends the 100% run to 7 league games.
