Mary Farrell Cup Semi Final
Castleknock Celtic 0, Woodlawn Sportslink 4
Woodlawn Sportslink from the Premier Division came to Porterstown this morning with a big reputation. Earlier this season, they had made it to the quarter finals of the All-Ireland Cup whilst in their own Premier Division, they are favourites to take the title.
For 75 minutes it was difficult to tell which team was from the Premier Division. Although Woodlawn had slightly more of the possession, they only threatened the Celtic goal on one occasion, in the first half with an excellent shot destined for the top corner, forcing Celtic goalkeeper Luke Kearney to make an incredible save that was nothing less than ‘world class’.
In the second half Celtic did have some scoring opportunities, but just weren’t able to capitalise. Woodlawn got their lucky break 15 minutes from the end when a mix up in the Celtic defence saw them go 1-0 down. They followed this piece of luck up with 3 well taken goals which killed off Celtic, the pick of which was a ‘Van Basten’ volley a la Holland v USSR 1988 re-live
The result today brought the curtains down on an incredible 13 match (league & cup) unbeaten run which saw 12 wins & 1 draw, with 35 goals scored and only 7 conceded- the best defensive record in the league.
It’s back to league duties on Tuesday evening at 6:30 with a home match in Porterstown against St. Ita’s. Promotion back to the Premier has been the priority for Celtic all season, and if they continue to turn in performances like this morning in the 4 remaining fixtures, then it’s very realisable. match action
