Castleknock Celtic 5, Rush Athletic 0
When Castleknock played Rush away last October they were on the wrong end of a 0 - 2 scoreline. In the intervening 7 months leading up to today’s final match of the season Castleknock had played 14 league matches winning 13 and drawing 1.
A draw today would secure the league title for Castleknock, however the lads wanted to go out with a bang, not a whimper. Castleknock started at high tempo and were rewarded when leading scorer Cory Power put them ahead after just 7 minutes. Castleknock didn’t sit back, they fought for every ball in all areas of the pitch. There is some confusion who scored the second Castleknock goal after 15 minutes. Matthew Mullen placed a corner just out of reach for the Rush goalkeeper. Whilst Cian Kelly challenged for the ball in the penalty area, it’s not certain who was the last Castleknock player to make contact with the ball. With a 2 goal cushion Castleknock dominated the remainder of the first half but couldn’t increase their lead.
It took almost 20 minutes of the second half before Castleknock extended their lead when Darren Doyle chased down a pass from midfield and blasted the ball into the back of the Rush net. This was the insurance goal that Castleknock wanted. For the remainder of the game Castleknock played exhibition football for the large crowd of supporters with further scores from David Spillane and perhaps the best of the lot which came about as a result of some pin point passes from Matthew Mullen to Ciaran Buggy to Cory Power who brought down the curtain on an excellent season with his 20th goal.
After the game the squad were presented with a trophy. Also presented was a Players Player of the Season to team Captain David Hickey.
The league table never lies and when the final table is published it will read Played 20, Won 16, Draws 2, Lost 2. Goals Scored 54 Goals Conceded 14 (only 13 from open play), with 10 clean sheets making Castleknock the tightest defence in the league
Finally a big thank you to all our supporters, parents, the Executive of Castleknock Celtic FC and our sponsor Brendan & Maggie O’Flaherty of Dolmen Construction who as well as providing new gear, provided the Players Player of the Season Trophy.
