DDSL 12B Castleknock win the battle of the Celts 4-1
• 31st August 2013: Castleknock Celtic 4 – 1 Leicester Celtic
And so a new season is upon us and with it comes the excitement of new opponents, new challenges and the chance to make dreams come through.
A good crowd was in attendance on a bright sunny morning as Castleknock welcomed Leicester Celtic to Porterstown Park. The game started brightly for Castleknock who showed that they want to continue the way they finished off last year by playing their own brand of passing free flowing football. In the early phases Castleknock were on top but could not find a way to breach the strong Leicester defence. Despite this early pressure it was Leicester who took the lead with a breakaway goal. This gave the visitors confidence and it was they who looked the more dangerous as they sought to punish Castleknock with breakaway attacks.
Fortunately Castleknock level with a fortuitous goal. Following a serious of rebounds John Kane followed up to see the ball over the line. Despite its fortuitous nature it was a goal young Kane deserved for his display of wing wizardry. This lifted Castleknock spirits who were dominant but despite this they still could not pierce the Leicester defence.
Minutes before half time Castleknock suffered a set back when Capt, Mark Hughes, who had been dominant at the back left the field with a groin strain. With the last play of the half Leicester split open the makeshift Castleknock defence and only a wonderful save by Tomas Bowe kept the scores level. HT: 1-1.
Castleknock started the half looking like a team on a mission with their passing and work rate having gone up a gear. Their dominant play was rewarded but in an unusual fashion. Leicester had a corner which was cleared forward to the talented Ciaran Collins 10 yards inside his own half. Collins had 50 yards plus 2 defenders to beat and the youngster showed how to do it as he raced forward before releasing a shot 15 yards out into the bottom left hand corner. However Leicester were far from finished and it took another Bowe save to keep Castleknock ahead. The nerves were eased when Leigh Reilly finished well following good build up to make it 3-1.
Still 10 minutes left and Leicester kept battling and it took 2 goal line clearances from one attack to preserve the two goal lead. The game was finally put beyond Leicesters reach when Matthew Elliott slotted home from 10 yards with a crisp shot following good work by Cian Egan.
More chances came and Andrei Enache who was excellent on the day can consider himself unlucky not to have got on the score sheet as his all round, all action, midfield display deserved it.
And so a 4-1 win. There’s room for improvement for sure but with 3 new players playing for their first match and it being the season opener the Coaches were more than pleased. There’s more to come from this team but as they say “Start as you mean to continueâ€. Well Castleknock got the start they wanted now let’s see can they keep it up. We shall see!!! WATCH THIS SPACE
