Maynooth Town 1, Castleknock Celtic 2.
On a morning that would have been more suited to water polo that soccer, Celtic made the journey to Maynooth - a venue where they had never taken 3 points in the past.
Although the weather was awful with torrential rain and gale force winds, the narrow pitch in Maynooth held up well. Celtic with the strong wind at their backs were slow to settle and let Maynooth take an early lead from a corner.
However, that might have been just the jolt Celtic needed and from restart they were back in the game and controlling the midfield. It might have been the rain, or perhaps the wind, whatever it was doesn’t matter, as Cory Power was beginning to rediscover his preseason form with a display of non stop effort and running which eventually led to his assist for Celtics first goal from the industrious Daniel Ferreira.
As the first half continued Celtic battled hard, particularly in midfield where a strong & physical Maynooth team weren’t giving up. Just before half time the aforementioned Power picked up an excellent pass from midfield and placed it out of the reach of the Maynooth goalkeeper.
Turning into the worst of the weather for the second half, Celtic knew that they would be under pressure. However thanks to excellent performances from Celtic keeper Luke Kearney, the entire defence & midfield, but in particular Conor Brennan, Celtic held out for what could be 3 very important points.
