When Celtic played Marino at U17’s last season, both matches were very close contests and it was no surprise when Marino finished second to Celtic in the final league table.
Despite an injury to regular goalkeeper Luke Kearney, Celtic were confident taking to the pitch, not just with stand in keeper, Tom Fitzsimons, but the squad as a whole. Prior to today’s match, this squad hadn’t lost a league match in over 12 months.
Celtic got the perfect start when Matthew Mullen’s inch perfect pass to Callum Carberry was finished with a first time shot to the back of the net. Celtic were dominating throughout with Ruairi O’Flaherty and David McCabe in midfield ensuring that Marino weren’t allowed settle on the ball.
The second goal, after much debate, was awarded to Matthew Mullen when his corner kick was fumbled by the Marino goalkeeper and fell over the line.
Celtic had set out to protect their stand in keeper and the back four of Shay Kinsella, Ben Byrne, David Hickey and Cian Kelly kept the Marino attack at bay.
As the game progressed, further goals from Aidan Sampson, Ben Byrne, Cory Power and a second from Carberry – the best of the day, ensured that Celtic maintained the winning start to the season with another clean sheet.
Once again, thanks again to all the support, old & new !!!
