It was a dull dark morning as Castleknock welcomed Glasnevin to Porterstown Park. The weather may have been bleak but the Young Celts lit up the sky with a 5 star performance.
The Boys started like 100 mtr sprinters - first to react, first to the ball and first to pass. The passing was exquisite and the only shock was that it took 10 minutes to break the deadlock. Following good build up play Leigh Reilly’s pass or was it a shot was met by the quick thinking and quick moving “Twinkle Toes” Kane who reacted quickest to finish from 3 yards. This led to a period of total dominance by the Celts with the lead extended when Ciaran Collins played a long ball in the air to Reilly who with his back to goal made a quick assessment and with a deft header placed the ball past the Glasnevin No 1. HT: 2-0
It was more of the same in the second half where Dylan Mc Donagh and Kian Ryan were introduced. With fresh legs the pace intensified and Ryan finally got his reward with a well taken shot, having come close on two occasions. Minutes later it was four when Ryan’s hunger and awareness saw him fire past the advancing keeper. In order to make sure, Reilly was on hand to touch home but even the Sky Sports cameras could not tell whose goal it was. There was to be no let up for Glasnevin as Collins, Matthew Russell and Matthew Elliott all came close before Celtic got a deserved fifth. If there was a doubt about who scored the fourth there was no arguing about who scored the fifth or the quality involved as Reilly kept the best to last. Receiving the ball inside the box, Reilly weaved through three players before placing the ball past the advancing keeper. A great goal and great to see the talented Reilly back to full form.
Glasnevin to their credit continued to battle and got their just desserts with 2 minutes left as their winger lifted the ball over keeper Thomas Bowe. FT 5-1
A great performance that brought a great result. The passing football was of the highest level and it wasn’t just up front as the performances of Cathal Flynn and Alex San Emeterio were assured which importantly allowed the midfield the freedom to advance forward to support the attack. At the end of the game the Boys were thrilled to hear that they had earned promotion and there was no better way to do it than with a 5 star performance. What was most pleasing was the reaction of the Boys to last week's disappointing draw with Mount Merrion by delivering two great performances since to secure promotion . Well done lads.
