They say a little “R & R” will help you relax well that was certainly the case for the Castleknock support as they enjoyed their own version of “R & R” aka Leigh Reilly & Matthew Russell as the Young Celts continued their winning way thanks to an all action first half performance.
Castleknock started like an express train and the only surprise was that it took them 10 minutes to get on the score sheet when Russell fed Reilly who scored from 6 yards out. Minutes later it was 2-0 with this time Reilly playing a lovely defence splitting pass to Russell who finished in style. Castleknock were bossing the midfield where Dylan Mc Donagh and Andrei Enache were in dominant form while the unstoppable Ciaran Collins and Alex San Emeterio provided the wing wizadry.
Mount Merrion were being cut open and only some solid goalkeeping by the Merrion stopper prevented more goals. Whenever Mount Merrion did break they were met by the immovable defence of Matthew Elliott and Cathal Flynn who were reading and countering any Mount Merrion threat. With 5 minutes of the half remaining the Celts got a deserved third when John “Twinkle Toes” Kane broke through the middle before playing a 1-2 with Russell before showing a mixture of determination and skill to finish well. HT: 3-0
With a 3-0 lead more was expected but it was Mount Merrion, to their credit, who started the better and it was no surprise when they clawed a goal back. This clearly gave the home side a lift and sensing uncertainty in Castleknock sought to capitalise. Indeed only some fine goalkeeping by Thomas Bowe preserved the Celts two goal lead.
Having weathered the storm Celtic gained the upperhand once again and both Reilly and Kian Ryan were unlucky not to add to their tally. Minutes later a 15 pass movement including a number of 1-2’s involving Ryan, Mark Hughes , and Collins that just failed to result in a goal when San Emeterio’s attempted effort was blocked. A goal duly came when Celtic broke swiftly from a Merrion corner. The ball was played to Russell who seeing his strike partner make the perfect run played a through ball to Reilly who finished with the confidence and panache you would expect from an in-form striker. FT: 4 -1.
And so another win against a gallant Mount Merrion. Liverpool has SAS, while here it was RAR who stole the headlines but there were headline performances everywhere in what was a fine team performance particularly the first half.
