DDSL 11D Knocklyon 5, Castleknock Celtic 3
Will Hennessy was today’s team captain, he won the toss and opted for the team to play into the sun and against the wind for the first half.
The game opened with three corners in quick succession for Knocklyon, all three were well defended, most notably by Tristan Browne who put in a great clearance for the second corner, Tristan for yet another game was notable for his high work rate, keep up the good work Tristan. In these opening minutes there were a series of goal chances culminating in Scott Daly making a good run and shot which was well saved by the Knocklyon goalie. It was then Knocklyon’s turn to take a shot at goal which was well saved by Sabine Ghet. This was followed by a good run from Scott Daly who finished with a great cross to Callum Oliphant who shot just wide. These early goal chances were followed by a really impressive passage of play by Castleknock Celtic with well controlled and accurate passing. Knocklyon got the first goal of the match. This was followed by a period of dominance by Knocklyon but Castleknock upped their game and Adam Nolan put in a couple of strong runs and had two good long range efforts at goal impressively using both feet . This was followed by goal number two for Knocklyon. The score remained 2-0 to Knocklyon at halftime who had shown some impressive skills.
In the opening minutes of the second half all of the play was in the Knocklyon half with Castleknock Celtic putting together a period of constant pressure which Knocklyon did well to survive with the score still 2-0. Great Imole then got in on the act and put in one of his trade mark long range shots, but he was very unlucky as his shot bounced off the left hand post. Knocklyon went on the attack again but good defending by the double act Sabine and Callum prevented goal number three. Fabian Wolski then put in a good run and a shot but this too went wide. Knocklyon then went on to score two goals in quick succession bringing the score to 4 – 0. Normal teams at this stage might let their heads drop but this Castleknock team have proved time and time again that they are fighters and Knocklyon were about to find out that the match is not over until the fat lady sings, or in this case Blows the whistle!!
The period that followed saw some impressive attacking play from Castleknock Celtic, reminiscent of the play we saw in the opening games of the season…. Will Hennessy got the team on the scoreboard with goal number one, quickly followed by goal number two from Fabian Wolski, who continues to rack up the goals. The game had now opened up into an end to end battle with impressive team spirit from Castleknock. Knocklyon played their part in making the second half a great spectacle and created a few more chances but Tom Maxwell marshalled the defence well and the score stayed at 4-2, but only for a short time as Scott Daly then scored goal number three. At this point a fantastic comeback was on the cards but as Castleknock poured forward looking for the equalizer, Knocklyon counter attacked and scored goal number five, 5-3, and this was how the game ended.
If ever a game typified the well worn cliché ‘A game of 2 halves’ it was this one with each team dominating in different halves. This was another fantastic game to watch and credit must go to all of the Castleknock team to come so close to a glorious comeback. Great effort lads, keep it up!
