On a sunny but chilly afternoon, it was the perfect November setting for a vintage local derby. And so it was, with both teams showing why they are fighting at the top of the league.
After the reverse at their own ground, when Celtic suffered their only defeat of the campaign, the match started with a good display from the visitors, and it only took 5 minutes for David Onitiu to open the scoring following his penetrating run along the left flank. Some felt that this would be easy for Celtic who have been scoring freely of late, but Verona had a marvellous chance to equalise but the chance went a-beggin'. It was a wake up call for Celtic. They closed all routes to goal with great displays in defence from Conor O'Leary, Keith and Kyle. In attack, David Onitiu and Jay Harper missed chances to extend the visitors' lead.
In the second half Celtic began to press forward more and this paid dividends when Jabari scored the second of the game to bring calmness to the 'crazy' visiting supporters. Celtic kept pressing and after a foul on Jay Harper, Ben Traynor took the free kick into the box where Sean C. forced the defender to push the ball into his own net. At 3-0, Celtic's management rang the changes. With Dino doing what he does best, putting the ball into the opposition box, Morgan K scored with his first touch of the ball, a header which gave the Verona keeper no chance. After last week when Conor O'Leary scored his first goal for the club, his partner from defence Keith decided that it was time for him to emulate his team mate by scoring his first goal for the club and what better way to do it than rifling home from outside the box.
While Celtic had a big win, the scoreline is flattering to them, as Verona were never 5 goals inferior to the visitors. It does however put more daylight between Celtic and their local rivals in the chase for the Under-14A1 title.
