Celtic's first match of the season got underway in Deerpark away to Mount Merrion FC. Both sides sized each other up in the early exchanges. Most of the first half was a midfield contest between two good passing sides who retained the ball well.
It took 10 minutes for the first chance on goal to arrive, and it was followed by both teams having decent chances.
As the match went on Castleknock started to look more dangerous especially on the counter-attack, very good runs with the ball from Conor and Daniel, combined with excellent passing from Alex, Lucas and Charlie which was rewarded with a well deserved goal from Lucas just before half time. Celtic looked forward to a more entertaining second half.
After the interval, Castleknock began dominating and controlling the match having a couple of chances, only to be denied by excellent goalkeeping. Celtic's players then started to slow down the tempo which allowed the opposition to get a foothold and draw level. The equaliser was a wake-up call for Castleknock who started again to press high and soon 2 goals from Conor put daylight between the sides. Conor really deserved to get his name on the score sheet as he put in an excellent performance in this match. Mateusz scored his first goal for the team on his debut. The last few minutes minutes of the match was a test for the Celtic defence as the opposition increased the pressure.
The discipline and hard work from Celtic's defence, combined with a strong leadership from team captain Remus Onitiu delivered a well deserved win away from home. Remus had led his team by example, encouraging his team mates during the more testing moments of the game.
Well done to the whole team for the hard work and very good display.
